By Foton South Africa
Foton South Africa has surpassed 5,000 vehicles on South African roads since its official market entry only 18 months ago, marking a significant milestone in the brand’s rapid local growth.
Strong Market Performance and Industry Recognition
The achievement comes alongside strong industry performance, with Foton recently ranking among the top-selling brands in both the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) and Medium Commercial Vehicle (MCV) segments, according to the latest NAAMSA sales data.
This dual momentum highlights the brand’s increasing traction in a highly competitive market, driven by a focused product strategy and growing customer confidence.
Leadership Perspective on Growth
“This milestone reflects the pace at which Foton is establishing itself in South Africa,” says Marius Smal, CEO of Foton South Africa. “Reaching over 5,000 vehicles on the road in a relatively short period (only 18 months) is a strong indicator of the market’s response to our product offering, as well as the strength of our dealer network and support structures.”
Product Strategy and Market Positioning
Since its launch, Foton has positioned itself around practical, fit-for-purpose vehicles designed for South African conditions, particularly within the bakkie and commercial vehicle segments. The recent introduction of the Tunland V-Series has further strengthened the brand’s presence in the double cab market.
“Our approach has been clear: to offer vehicles that deliver on durability, value and real-world usability,” adds Smal. “This milestone is not only about growth in numbers, but about building long-term trust with South African customers.”
Dealer Network and National Support
Foton’s national dealership network of 63 dealerships, has played a key role in supporting this expansion, ensuring accessibility, sales support and aftersales service across the country.
Local Assembly and Future Growth
Looking ahead, the brand is entering its next phase of growth with the commencement of local vehicle assembly at its Gqeberha facility, which will play a critical role in strengthening Foton’s long-term position in South Africa.
The facility, which represents Foton’s first overseas manufacturing base, is expected to enhance supply efficiency, support localisation, and contribute to job creation and supplier development within the South African automotive sector.
Strengthening South Africa’s Automotive Ecosystem
“The start of local assembly marks a major step forward for the brand,” says Smal. “It allows us to respond more effectively to local market demand, while contributing to South Africa’s broader automotive manufacturing ecosystem.”
Continued Expansion and Market Momentum
As Foton continues to expand its footprint, the company remains focused on strengthening its product offering, dealer network, and aftersales support, while building a sustainable presence in one of Africa’s most competitive automotive markets.
The over 5,000-unit milestone underscores Foton’s growing relevance in South Africa and signals continued momentum as the brand scales its operations and local investment. This number shows that the dealer network is fully engaged and actively selling, and it confirms that Foton’s acceptance in the marketplace is growing and that our brand equity is strengthening. “Foton is not emerging, it’s accelerating,” ends Smal.
